Long Distance Walkie-Talkie Rescue

Girl responds to injured hiker 100 miles away

MARYSVILLE, Washington -- Just 11 years old, Mikayala Whitley is the central figure in a lucky, long-distance communications glitch that led to the rescue of an injured man.

The Washington state girl was playing Sunday with a walkie-talkie outside her home in Marysville, north of Seattle, when she heard a voice call for help -- from 100 miles away.

Although her walkie-talkie boasts only a two-mile range, the signal was loud and clear.

In the mountains visible from Whitley's back porch, injured hiker Michael Wyant, 49, also had a walkie-talkie with the same range. Nevertheless, he was able to keep in contact with the 11-year-old girl throughout the afternoon, even though he was in a different county.

Whitley's parents called the Chelan County Sheriff's Department, which launched a rescue with Whitley acting as a communications relay between the hiker and rescuers.

Wyant was picked up by a helicopter later that afternoon. He was treated at Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee and released. He then called to thank his radio rescuer.

Although Whitley's house is on a hill facing the mountains, it's still hard to explain how two off-the-shelf walkie-talkies found each other over a 100-mile distance. The sixth-grader, however, has an explanation of her own.

"I think God really helped a lot," she said.
